A Slow Sunday Reset Routine
There’s something about Sundays that makes me crave a softer pace.
Not the ultra-productive, perfectly aesthetic kind of Sunday you see online where someone deep cleans their entire house before 9am and meal preps for seven days straight. I’m talking about a gentler kind of reset — one that helps me mentally prepare for the week without completely draining myself before Monday even arrives.
Over time, I’ve realized my favorite Sundays are the slow ones. The cozy ones. The ones where the house smells like coffee, music is playing in the background, and I’m simply trying to make life feel a little calmer before the chaos of the work week begins.
This is my ideal slow Sunday reset routine.
A Slow Morning (Without Rushing)
I try really hard not to immediately grab my phone and doom scroll the second I wake up. Some Sundays I succeed better than others.
Instead, I like easing into the morning:
opening the curtains
making coffee
feeding the pets
sitting in silence for a few minutes
listening to soft music while the house wakes up
Usually there’s a candle lit almost immediately. Even in daylight. Especially in daylight.
Music sets the mood for my entire Sunday reset. I usually rotate between:
the Interstellar (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) soundtrack
soft classical playlists
cozy instrumental Spotify playlists
mellow jazz or coffeehouse music
The goal is less “be productive” and more “make home feel peaceful.”
Tidying the House in Small Bursts
I used to think resetting for the week meant deep cleaning the entire house in one day.
Now I focus more on small wins:
starting a load of laundry
clearing off the kitchen counters
vacuuming pet hair
changing the sheets
taking out trash
resetting my desk or creative space
I’ve learned that doing a little bit throughout the day feels much less overwhelming than trying to turn Sunday into a marathon cleaning session.
Sometimes I’ll set a timer for 20–30 minutes and just tackle one room at a time.
Honestly, even folding one basket of laundry can make the whole week feel slightly more manageable.
The “Get My Life Together” Portion of the Day
Every Sunday has a point where I suddenly remember I am, in fact, an adult with responsibilities.
This is when I:
check my planner
look over my work schedule
pay attention to upcoming appointments
make a grocery list
respond to texts I forgot about all week
brain dump everything floating around in my head
I’m a huge fan of writing everything down because otherwise my brain tries to remember all of it at once at 2am.
I also like using this time to romanticize the upcoming week a little bit:
choosing outfits
planning cozy lunches
picking books I want to read
deciding what playlists I want to listen to during work
Tiny things somehow make stressful weeks feel more survivable.
A Cozy Afternoon Reset
Sunday afternoons are for slowing down again after the productive portion is over.
This usually includes:
reading
sitting outside if the weather is nice
watching comfort shows
working on creative projects
scrolling Pinterest for inspiration
lighting another candle because apparently one is never enough
Sometimes I’ll spend time working on clay creations for EmileeSpeaks or brainstorming blog ideas for EmileeSpeaks Blog.
Creative hobbies make me feel the most like myself again after a busy week.
The Sunday Night Wind Down
Sunday evenings can feel heavy sometimes. That quiet anxiety before Monday sneaks in so easily.
I’ve started trying to make Sunday nights feel comforting instead of stressful:
showering early
putting on clean pajamas
dimming lights around the house
making tea
avoiding overstimulation
reading instead of endlessly scrolling
I try to remind myself that rest is productive too.
Not every Sunday needs to be optimized.
Sometimes the best reset is simply creating a home and atmosphere that feels safe, cozy, and calm before another busy week begins.
Final Thoughts
My slow Sunday reset routine isn’t about perfection.
Sometimes I accomplish everything on my list. Sometimes I barely fold laundry and watch documentaries all day under a blanket. Both versions count.
For me, Sundays are less about “getting ahead” and more about reconnecting with myself before the week starts again.
A little music.
A little tidying.
A good book.
Soft lighting.
Comfort food.
Quiet moments.
That’s usually enough.
