gone girl [book review]
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
I'm having a reallyyy hard time writing a review for this book. I finished it this afternoon and I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it. It took me two tries and nearly two months to finish this book. I just couldn't get into it in the beginning. In fact I wasn't a fan of the whole first half of the book... It was nearly torturous to get through.
Gone Girl is a story about a woman, Amy Dunn, who goes missing on her 5th Wedding Anniversary. The entire first half of the book is about the investigation of her disappearance. Which is heavily leaning towards her husband, Nick Dunn as being a bad guy. The story is told by Nick && Amy [via her diary] in a take turns every other chapter format. I don't normally mind this format, however, Amy's chapters were incredibly boring to me. I found myself skimming them. You're supposed to feel sorry for each one of them for different reasons as they describe to you the problems in their marriage. The problems themselves were trite and could only be classified as "first world problems". I didn't find myself empathizing with either of them.
The second half of the book slaps you in the face with a dark twist. I admit it caught my interest at this point. Mainly because I was trying to figure out how we were going to drag this out for another 50% of the book, after revealing that big of a bombshell. Both characters are revealed as deranged, which was exciting. It still just fell short for me.
The ending [which I obvi won't reveal] was far more twisted than I expected. I think it was slightly depressing, but fitting. When I hit the last page on my kindle, I looked up at my son and said "that sucked". However, as the day went on && I reflected on it more, there's a part of me that really enjoyed the ending.
Overall, I just didn't get the hype of it. The writing itself was great, the story was just missing something. I'm anxious to try another book by Gillian Flynn though, and will probably see the movie in October. It has Neil Patrick Harris, of course I'll see it! Aha!
[myyy goodreads rating for Gone Girl: 2/5 stars]

I hate when I can't get into a book. Its cool that it had a nice twist that the end though.
ReplyDeleteMichelle F.
That stinks.. all that anticipation to be dragged on and on.. at least there was a good twist at the end.
ReplyDeleteI would have never finished it! Good job sticking with it! I like that you give honest reviews :)
ReplyDeleteIt was so hard... I tried reading it about 6 months ago and gave up. Decided in May to give it a go again. I had to see why it's so popular. I still don't see it, ahah! =(
DeleteI am a little ways into this book - started reading it while traveling. I love it so far, but I can't wait for the ending! I hope I don't think it sucks, because I usually have that problem with popular novels.
ReplyDeleteIf you love it so far, I think you'll be okay =)
DeleteCome back && let me know what you think when you finish!!
love the cover - simple yet effective. book cover art is really an art.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I love a mystery from time to time. Usually though, if the start is slow, I never get to the finish. Sounds like it's worth sticking it out to the end.
ReplyDeleteI know the twist and it's a interesting one....thanks for a honest review as well..
ReplyDeleteDang! I have this book and haven't read it yet. At least you gave an honest review on it.
ReplyDeleteRead it anyway! I'm not exactly in the majority with how I felt. I've picked up another of the authors books though because I did like her writing style. Hope I like it more!
DeleteAppreciate the honest review! I have such a limited amount of time to read, it's good to have a real opinion.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you didn't like the book! I hate wasting time on books that don't fully interest me!
ReplyDeleteI was totally caught up in the book, but I hated the ending! I'll be curious to see how they make the movie though.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see the movie too. I'm very curious about it.
DeleteI'm reading a book right now that I started so long ago but I've had to put it aside to finish tons of projects and it got to the good part too when I had to stop. I'll probably have to reread a chapter just to remember what happened.
ReplyDeleteP.S. like your honest review though!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to read about the dark twists because in a story, there should be something bad to get readers more interested on how it's going to be resolved in the end. Sorry to hear that the reveal of characters fell short on you.
ReplyDeleteOh man, I am just laughing as I read your review because I felt very much the same way. I was like, "Huh?" when I finished. I couldn't pin point if I liked it or hated it. I mean, I knew I didn't love it, but I...well..ya, you get it! Weird book anyway.
ReplyDeleteAhah! I'm glad someone else felt the same! I almost feel like there will be a witch hunt for me because I didn't love it.
DeleteI haven't read this book, but your review is fantastic :).
ReplyDeleteThank you! <3
DeleteI like that there was a twist ending. It's hard to enjoy a book if you can predict the ending.
ReplyDeleteJust because of your review I am intrigued. I will have to read it just to see if I feel the same way. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to find out what you thought! Come back and let me know <33
DeleteHuh? I'll watch the movie first before I read this one. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this one and now I won't even bother. There's no way I could force myself to continue reading a book that bored me. I'll be checking out the movie instead. Thanks for a great review.
ReplyDeleteYou may like the book though? Everyone is different... An author reached out to me to read his parody of the book he did. I'm interested to start reading that! Aha!
DeleteI haven't read this. I've been told I wouldn't like the ending. We'll see though.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your honest review. It is refreshing when people point out the good and the bad.
ReplyDeleteOkay, i'm all into it now! I want to know about the dark twist!
ReplyDeleteAha! It's a dark twist for sure! Enjoy!
DeleteI have wanting to read this one.... now I'm going to have to go get it after reading this :) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDo it! And please let me know what you think! <333
DeleteSucks when you can't get into a book after the first few pages. I can always guess how I will feel about a book after reading the first page. But everyone has different opinion on books so I would want to read it to see how I feel. Thanks for sharing your review with us!
ReplyDeleteI love reading and I am always looking for new books to get into. I will be sure to be checking this one out! Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to know how honest your review for this book and also how you really feel about it, I have the same dilemma but mine is more bit boring because I always get to love a book by its cover and synopsis but then will not finish it until the book grew bored to me and will just sit on my bookshelf.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for sticking with it after the 1st half. I probably would have contacted whoever wanted me to do the review and said I'd been struck blind. Based on your disappointment, I'm not going to bother. I'm glad you were honest
ReplyDeleteOh no one asked me to put myself through this lol. I'm just a book lover and like to share my thoughts when I finish a book. I'm giving the author another try and started reading another book of hers. We'll see how it goes! <333
DeleteYea, some books I need it to get moving to keep me intrigued or I pick up another, sort of like watching TV. Every book is different and it was a great honest review.
ReplyDeleteI got a book from the library and started reading on the way back home. By the 4th train station I thought I didn´t like it, by the 9th I knew I wouldn´t finish it. Must be the third in my whole life. Sometimes books just don´t work for us..
ReplyDeleteI pushed through. It's been several days and I'm still unsure about it! Aha! I've started another of her books though, "Dark Places". I'm already more interested in it.
DeleteI've been wondering wether to read this or not but i think i'll give it a mis now
